Tell me about... Bottled Water

As Uisce says, your body is made up of 70% water, so it's very important stuff. Water has no calories, so it is not a source of energy, but it does contain other things the body needs like minerals.

Bottled water can be 'still' (no bubbles) or 'sparkling' (with bubbles added). Some sparkling mineral water actually comes out of the ground with the bubbles already in it!

The place where water comes out of the ground is called a ‘spring'. Can you think of two other meanings of the word ‘spring'?

Did you know that there are different types of bottled water?
We bet you thought it was all the same! In fact there are 3 official categories of bottled water, and there are rules about which name goes on the bottle:

1. Natural Mineral Water
You can tell from its name that this water is natural and it has lots of minerals in it, which means this water is very good for you!

This water comes from an underground water-table or an underground well. Sometimes it comes out of the ground at a natural spring, or there might have been a hole drilled deep into the ground to get it out. It is tapped and put it into bottles at its source.

There are very strict rules about what can be called ‘natural mineral water'. It is different from ordinary drinking water in a few ways:

(a) its minerals and trace elements
(b) it hasn't been treated
(c) it is bottled/packaged at source
(d) it is officially recognised as a Natural Mineral Water.

2. Spring Water
This water also contains the minerals that the body needs. It also has its source in an underground water-table or underground well, and it is bottled/ packaged where it comes out of the ground. This water may be treated in some way to add to its purity and quality.

3. Table Water
This can come from different sources and may be treated to improve its quality. It can be from the same places as our ordinary water supply, which comes out of the taps at home.

There may be different kinds of bottled water, but there is only one Uisce, that's for sure!
